Anita

After completing an MSc in Transport Planning and Engineering at Leeds University, I joined Steer in the Autumn of 1994. Based in the Leeds office, I developed my skills in demand forecasting and project management working on the first shadow toll motorway projects launched by the UK’s Highways Agency (now Highways England). At that time, other countries were also beginning to look at alternative payment mechanisms to fund their highway and railway infrastructure programs and Steer quickly became a leading provider of traffic and technical advisory services worldwide.

I am curious about all aspects of transport – different modes, behavioural response, infrastructure delivery, funding, appraisal and policy. The breadth of work Steer undertakes has allowed me to create my own unique career path, fuelling my passion in transport planning as well as fulfilling my career aspirations.

During my time at Steer, I’ve developed my technical and project management/direction skills through working closely with colleagues on many exciting (and a few exotic) projects. I’ve found senior staff to be accessible, personable and keen to provide advice and to mentor junior team members. We lead by example.

Flexible working practices at Steer have allowed me to juggle the demands of a growing family with my career progression. My role these days varies from local transport planning advice in the North of England, advising on international privately-financed infrastructure projects to supervising staff and publishing guidance on best practice and thought pieces on the future impacts of disruptive technologies.
