La Rinascente is a high-end Italian retail chain, where it is possible to find the best Made in Italy products and the latest international brands. In October 2017, Rinascente opened a second flagship store in the heart of Rome. Located in Via Tritone, an area with a rich historical and cultural heritage in the city centre, it was key to analyse the impact the building could produce on the vehicular and pedestrian mobility in the area.
Our project team undertook the analysis of the mobility in the surrounding area, and the evaluation of the impact produced by the new store.
The Rinascente flagship store will attract up to 3,500 visitors on peak days, in a neighbourhood that is already strongly characterised by the presence of tourists. Our team quantified the current mobility of the area and developed a microscopic simulation model, involving vehicular and pedestrian mobility, with which it was possible to analyse the functionality of roadways and pedestrian areas.
Successes and outcomes
The analysis carried out by the team identified two possible solutions for the infrastructure. The first included minimum intervention measures, such as the removal of obstacles present on the sidewalks, to solve the problems identified for pedestrians and ease the opening of the new store. The second solution envisaged measures with greater impact for a wider time horizon, such as the widening of the sidewalks and a new configuration of the parking spaces, which will allow the optimisation of the pedestrian and vehicular flow standards in the area.
