Oxford Street is a retail centre of both local and global importance, attracting visitors from the UK and overseas, however the quality of the existing street environment faces critical challenges to ongoing success, most notably in terms of: pedestrian comfort; road safety and security; air quality; vehicle dominance; and transport accessibility.
The installation of the scramble crossing at Oxford Circus was a bold attempt to address some of these issues, however Transport for London (TfL), Westminster and Camden councils, as well as the West End Partnership, are working on plans to continue improving the area and build on the opportunities provided by the opening of Crossrail in December 2018.
Steer is supporting TfL with analysis, design, options appraisal, business case, and stakeholder engagement in relation to different scenario for Oxford Street, including pedestrianisation. As part of the commission our Design team have prepared high quality graphic inputs illustrating the potential solutions in support of the engagement process.
