SuperStadium Management Company Limited, the operators of Hull’s KC Stadium, the Hull City and East Riding Councils, and city development agency Hull Forward, are co-funding an initial high-level study to examine the business case for establishing a rail halt to serve both the football stadium and Hull Royal Infirmary Hospitals complex.
Leading transport consultant Steer Davies Gleave has been commissioned to undertake the study and their findings are expected to be completed early in 2009. SDG will assess whether there is case for proceeding with a more comprehensive Project Inception Report which would be the minimum requirement for initiating an application for Government funding for the proposed project. In addition to serving the KC Stadium and the HRI Hospitals complex, a new station would also support the regeneration plans of the local Newington and St Andrews neighbourhood, and contribute to local environmental benefits through the encouragement of modal shift.
Notes to the Editor
- SuperStadium Management Company (SMC) Ltd is the management and operating company responsible for Hull's Kingston Communications Stadium.
- The proposed site of the new station is just west of Argyle Street at the junction of Hull-Cottingham-Beverley-Bridlington and Hull-Selby/ Doncaster railway lines.
- The 25,400 capacity KC Stadium was opened in December 2002. It has proved a success as a major venue for international sports, concert and conference events, and most recently by the rapid rise of Hull City Football Club to achieve Premier League status for the 2008-2009 football season.
- The Hull Royal Infirmary complex has expanded to incorporate the Hull & East Riding Eye Hospital and the Hull & East Riding Maternity Hospital.
- A previous study by SDG in 2002 did not advance due to lack of funding at that time.
- Interviews with the Project Manager are available on request.
